*** WARNING ABOUT DUPED ITEMS ***
VINE COORD'S REMOVED!!!
05.08.2008 - Updated by Lynn
EA just announced they reverted ALL the Vine Cord Sandals. Since there was ONLY one original all of those that have been sold or traded were definately duped. Awesome job EA, and I can't say that enough. I want to make sure you guys all realize that ANY high end event item you buy now is most likely duped and is very likely to have the same thing happen to it as the Vine Cords did. I personally would never touch any of those and advise you guys to do the same unless you like paying alot of money for something normal.

Thanks EA :)

E-MAIL FROM MARION ASKING ME TO POST THIS. 11.13.2006 - Updated by Lynn
EVERYONE READ THIS, IT'S INTERESTING

Dear all,

Last week was quite a tumultuous one for most of the UO sellers as the majority of the industry's biggest traders, from whom many of you used to innocently purchase gold and artifacts, had their accounts banned for possession and trade in duplicated items. The list of sellers that were banned is long and the names that I know of include Detox, Icy Raine, Leo, Luna Brokers, Malkor, MMORPG Warehouse, Nalithra, Parkay, Ultimas, UOResources, UOTreasures and Vita Drakonia. The only sellers who were unaffected were in fact those that did not choose to buy all the cheap artifacts that were being sold.

I'm sure most of the UO community will commend such a move on the part of Electronic Arts (EA). The banning and deletion of the duplicated items will go a long way to restoring the integrity of the game and accordingly our gaming enjoyment. The massive multiplication of currency and items has undermined, to an intolerable degree, the value of seeking them out for ourselves, winning them in battle or finding them in the strange and glorious parts of this fantasy world that we so love to inhabit. Duplicating items and the selling thereof undermines the very essence of gaming.

And, on that note, I would like to offer my most unreserved, wholehearted and sincere apologies to the entire UO gaming community and Electronic Arts because I was one of those sellers trading in duplicated items. In all honesty, it was a strategy adopted in line with the capitalist fundamentals of maximising profit. But it was also borne of necessity. As the proliferation of duplicated items in the market grew, it became impossible to remain competitive. In short there were too many sellers trading in duplicated gold and artifacts - a scenario that led to the price per million plummeting, squeezing profit margins to unsustainable levels if you weren't able to get your hands on the duplicated stuff.

Nonetheless, after eight years of trading I have lost all my accounts, believe me this has been a sobering experience and I have been forced to re-examine my motives. If the sellers of in-game commodities want to see our industry gain greater acceptance and credibility among the purist gamers and even the game developers themselves, we have to all have to resist and oppose such short-sighted tactics. There is a clear and justifiable demand for the sale of in-game goods and accordingly, I would like to see our 'industry' become a legitimate and sustainable means of doing business. And, so I offer my apologies not only to those in the community who have been prejudiced by my actions, but as a means of challenging all sellers to resist selling duplicated items. The legitimacy and sustainability of trading in virtual items is dependent on our integrity - we need to put the enjoyment of our customers first, not profits. Instead of trying to undercut each other by sourcing duplicated goods, we need to stand together in resisting the hacking of code. Let's meet customer's demands ethically. It can only be to our long-term advantage and those of our fellow gamers and customers.

So, to those I've prejudiced I offer my pledge not only to pursue ethical trade but to promote it too. And I'd like to ask your co-operation - be a discerning buyer and challenge your broker or re-seller to sell you items that haven't been duplicated. Competitors and colleagues - I hope you'll accept the challenge in the spirit in which it is intended. I'm feeling as devastated as you all by the daunting prospect of having to begin acquiring stock from scratch all over again. But more importantly, I share your concern that EA's informal tolerance of the sale of in-game commodities may be swinging in the direction of prohibition. Let us not give them reason to question the value of in-game trade and rather work with them to meet the needs of their gamers, our customers.

Sincerely

Marion

More Than 400 Dupers Banned 11.09.2006 - Updated by Lynn
The following was posted on the Ultima Online Website:

More Than 400 Dupers Banned, Tens of Thousands of Items Deleted
After a month-long investigation and a thorough review of all involved, we:

• banned more than 400 accounts,
• deleted more than 100,000 illegally duplicated items, and
• deleted more than one trillion in gold.

More importantly, the bugs that allowed this particular kind of illegal duplication have been fixed. Also, duping and exploit prevention/detection systems have been in place for some time now - systems that help us to identify and eliminate cheaters.

We take all forms of cheating extremely seriously, especially cheats that affect the in game economy and devalue the hard work of honest players. We will never stop investigating and solving these issues, and appreciate very much those of you who contribute to the fight against cheating. We’ve had to keep these developments quiet until we completed our investigations, but we are very proud to be able to make this announcement today.

Also:

If you cannot find your vendor after today's bannings, it is because we set it in quarantine until we could speak with the owner. We apologize for any inconvenience, and ask that you page a GM as soon as you can to retrieve your belongings. Your items will be returned to you at our discretion. Thanks!

Please see today's duping announcement for more information.

YAY EA!! 15 Trillion in Dirty Money Removed from the Game 07.06.2006 - Updated by Lynn
The following was posted on the Ultima Online Website.

As outlined in our Rules of Conduct, we do not allow players to enrich themselves through the abuse of bugs or exploitation of game mechanics. We reserve the right to confiscate any items created through such means.

Recently, we discovered a large number of checks for amounts over one million gold pieces. Checks were never intended to exist in denominations of more than a million. Unfortunately, these inflated checks have been used by exploiters to store extremely large amounts of gold. These checks have now been removed from the game.

This action has resulted in over 180 accounts being terminated and approximately 15 Trillion (15,000,000,000,000) gold pieces have been permanently removed from the game.

We realize that some of checks for amounts over one million gold were created by players who did not intend to exploit or harm the game. The vast majority of these checks have been automatically replaced with separate checks equal to the total amount of the replaced check, which can be found in a brown bag where the original check was located. If the check was inside of a container, you will find the brown bag in the same location as that container. Please note that in some cases the brown bag will be underneath the container, so you will need to move the container to access the bag. If the check was in your backpack or in your bank box, the brown bag will be located in your bank box.

In some cases, this may cause your bank box or your house to hold more than their item limit. Don’t worry; the new checks are still safe! However, before you will be allowed to place anything more into your bank box or lock down an item in your house, you will have to remove enough items from your bank box or unlock enough items from your house to bring the total number of items below the item limit.

In rare cases where we could not safely convert these checks, the checks were automatically placed in a red secure container with the label, “Please contact a GM about this item.” These containers will not decay, so you may page a GM at your leisure to convert the checks. Please note: If these containers reside in a house, the house owner must be present.

We are committed to maintaining the integrity of Ultima Online, and will continue our efforts to rid the game of cheaters along with their ill-gotten gains. If you haven't done so recently, please take a moment to read the Terms of Service and Rules of Conduct, and remember to abide by them at all times.
